Passo Gardena

I asked an question yesterday about driving over the Passo Gardena when I have an overnight in Colfosco and got the following answer.

You answer :
Yes, in principle. Colfosco is on the Alta Badia side of Passo Gardena, so you can cross the pass when arriving from Val Gardena and ride back over it on departure. If you approach Colfosco from Brunico or Cortina instead, you would need to make Passo Gardena an out-and-back ride or include it in a loop.

What do you mean with "If you approach Colfosco from Brunico or Cortina instead, you would need to make Passo Gardena an out-and-back ride or include it in a loop."

Answers: 1What I meant is that Passo Gardena is only on your direct route to Colfosco if you arrive from the Val Gardena side, for example from Ortisei or Selva di Val Gardena.

If you arrive from Brunico through Val Badia, or from Cortina through Passo Falzarego and Passo Valparola, you can reach Colfosco without crossing Passo Gardena. In that case, to ride over Passo Gardena you would have two options:

Ride from Colfosco over Passo Gardena and then return to Colfosco along the same road. This is an out-and-back ride.
Cross Passo Gardena and continue over other mountain passes to create a circular route back to Colfosco. This is a loop.

So the sentence referred only to the route you would need to take, not to whether you are allowed to cross the pass.
